Read the Edited Video Transcript for ‘How to Pack an Olympus BX Microscope’
Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, I’m going to show you how to properly disassemble, protect, and pack an Olympus microscope for safe shipping.
Proper packing is critical because microscope components are delicate, expensive, and easily damaged if not secured correctly.
This guide covers:
- Disassembly
- Individual component protection
- Double boxing
- Final shipping preparation
Tools Needed
You’ll need the built-in 3 mm Allen wrench, typically located in the upper-right corner of the microscope.
Step 1: Remove the Microscope Head
- Remove the 3 mm Allen wrench
- Loosen the screw holding the head in place
- Carefully remove the head
⚠️ Important:
The head is one of the most commonly damaged parts, so handle it carefully.
Step 2: Remove the Nosepiece
Next, remove the nosepiece, which contains the objectives.
Removal Steps:
- Twist the nosepiece off
- Set it aside carefully
Step 3: Remove the Stage
- Loosen the stage screw
- Remove the stage
Step 4: Remove the Stage Bracket and Condenser
Using the Allen wrench again:
- Remove the stage bracket
- Remove the condenser assembly
Packing Individual Components
Each component should be wrapped separately to minimize damage.
Condenser and Substage Components
- Wrap the substage condenser
- Wrap the condenser separately
Nosepiece with Objectives
Wrap the nosepiece carefully with objectives attached (or remove objectives separately if preferred).
Packing the Head
The head is especially fragile.
Recommendation:
- Wrap thoroughly in bubble wrap
- Double box it
Packing the Stage
The stage is another frequently damaged component.
Important:
Remove the stage screw before packing.
Protecting the Coaxial Drive
The coaxial drive mechanism is especially vulnerable.
Recommendation:
Secure it firmly using bubble wrap and tape to prevent movement during shipping.
Blue Filter Warning
Some Olympus stands include a blue filter.
⚠️ Important:
Remove the blue filter before shipping.
Why?
- It is easily broken
- Replacement can be expensive
Place it in a protective bubble bag or sealed padded pouch.
Wrapping the Main Stand
The stand itself is delicate and should be heavily wrapped.
Recommendation:
- Use at least 3–4 feet of bubble wrap
- Wrap in multiple directions for maximum protection
Boxing the Stage
A 12″ x 10″ x 8″ box is typically a great size for the stage.
Packing Method:
- Line the bottom with foam or thick bubble wrap
- Place the stage inside
- Secure the coaxial controls
- Add additional foam or bubble wrap
- Fill all empty spaces
⚠️ Nothing inside the box should move.
Boxing the Head
A second 12″ x 10″ x 8″ box works well for the head.
Packing Method:
- Line the box with foam or bubble wrap
- Place the wrapped head inside
- Fill all empty spaces securely
Shake the box lightly—if anything moves, add more padding.
Packing the Main Microscope Stand
For the microscope stand:
Recommended Inner Box:
16″ x 16″ x 16″ cube
Steps:
- Add 2–3 inches of padding on the bottom
- Insert the stand
- Surround it completely with:
- Bubble wrap
- Foam
- Packing peanuts
Double Boxing the Main Stand
Recommended Outer Box:
20″ x 20″ x 20″ cube
Steps:
- Add packing peanuts or foam to the bottom
- Place the 16″ cube inside
- Fill all sides with additional packing peanuts
- Ensure zero movement
Packing Remaining Components
For the remaining parts (head box, stage box, accessories):
Recommended Box:
24″ x 16″ x 16″
Steps:
- Line with bubble wrap
- Add boxed components
- Fill all empty spaces with packing peanuts or foam
Final Packing Rule
Nothing should move inside any box.
If you shake the box and hear or feel movement:
- Add more padding
- Re-secure components
Best Practices Summary
Always:
- Wrap components individually
- Remove blue filters
- Protect coaxial controls
- Double box fragile parts
- Fill all empty space
When in Doubt:
Double box everything.
Final Thoughts
Proper microscope packing can mean the difference between:
- Safe arrival
- Costly repairs
