How to Adjust an Olympus BX Tension Ring
Read the Edited Video Transcript for ‘How to Adjust an Olympus BX Tension Ring’
Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, we’re going to show you how to adjust the focus tension ring on an Olympus microscope.
This adjustment procedure applies to several Olympus microscope series, including:
- Olympus BX Series
- Olympus SZX Series
- Olympus IX Series
The tension adjustment mechanism works essentially the same way across these microscope platforms.
Understanding the Focus Tension Ring
The focus tension ring controls how much resistance is applied to the coarse focus mechanism.
If the tension is set too loose, you may notice:
- The stage slowly drifting downward
- The image shifting out of focus
- Difficulty maintaining focus at higher magnifications
Proper tension adjustment helps keep the microscope stable and focused during use.
Locating the Tension Ring
For demonstration purposes, we’ve removed the stage so the adjustment is easier to see.
The focus tension ring is the inner ring located on the right side of the microscope, adjacent to the focus controls.
Increasing the Tension
To increase focus tension:
- Locate the inner tension ring.
- Rotate the ring clockwise (to the right).
This will add resistance to the focus mechanism and help prevent stage drift.
Decreasing the Tension
To decrease focus tension:
- Rotate the tension ring counterclockwise (to the left).
This will reduce resistance and make the focus controls easier to turn.
Common Symptoms of Improper Tension
If the tension is too loose, you may experience:
- Focus drifting during observation
- The stage slowly lowering on its own
- Difficulty maintaining focus at higher magnifications
- Image movement while viewing specimens
In many cases, these issues can be corrected simply by adjusting the tension ring.
Final Thoughts
The focus tension ring is a simple but important adjustment that helps maintain smooth, stable microscope operation.
If your microscope is drifting out of focus or the stage is not holding its position properly, checking the tension adjustment should be one of the first troubleshooting steps.
