Olympus BX45 Pathology Microscope

Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, we’re going to take a look at the Olympus BX45 microscope.
The BX45 is a great microscope for a variety of applications, but the system we’re showing today is configured specifically for pathology.
Ergonomic Tilting Head
This microscope is equipped with an Olympus U-TBI-3 ergonomic tilting binocular head.
This is an excellent head for pathology applications because the viewing angle can be adjusted to provide a more comfortable working position. You can sit back while viewing specimens, helping reduce neck strain during extended periods of microscope use.
Other heads can also be installed on the BX45, including a standard fixed binocular head or a trinocular head, but the ergonomic tilting head is one of our favorite configurations. It’s comfortable, durable, and very well suited for everyday pathology work.
Wide-Field Eyepieces
This microscope is equipped with Olympus 10x eyepieces featuring a wide 22 mm field of view.
The wider field allows you to see more of the specimen at once and provides a comfortable viewing experience.
Objective Configuration
For this pathology setup, we’ve installed five objectives:
- 2x
- 4x
- 10x
- 20x
- 40x
This is probably our most popular objective configuration for pathology applications and provides a useful range of magnifications for examining specimens.
Adding an Analyzer and Polarizer
The BX45 also provides the ability to add an analyzer and polarizer when needed.
There’s a dedicated slot on the microscope for the analyzer, while the polarizer can be installed in the appropriate slot below the condenser.
We have another video demonstrating how to install and use these components, which we’ll link in the video description.
Condenser and Köhler Illumination Controls
The condenser has two centering controls that allow you to properly center the condenser when setting Köhler illumination.
We’ve also produced a separate video showing how to set Köhler illumination, and we’ll include a link to that tutorial in the description.
The microscope includes a control for raising and lowering the condenser, as well as a separate control for swinging the condenser’s top lens element in and out of the optical path.
Built-In Allen Wrench
One convenient feature of the Olympus BX Series is the included Allen wrench.
The wrench is stored directly on the microscope in the back-right corner, so it’s readily available whenever you need to make adjustments or remove certain components.
Changing the Condenser Cassette
If you’re using the microscope for an application other than pathology, such as phase contrast, the condenser can be reconfigured.
Using the supplied Allen wrench, loosen the retaining screw near the condenser assembly and slide the cassette out.
This allows you to install the appropriate phase rings for phase contrast applications.
Daylight Blue Filter
This BX45 is also equipped with a daylight blue filter.
Because a halogen bulb naturally produces warmer, more orange-colored illumination, the daylight blue filter helps provide a cooler, whiter appearance.
The halogen illumination system can also be upgraded to LED illumination if desired, giving the microscope a more modern lighting system.
Changing the Bulb
If you need to replace the bulb, first turn the microscope off and unplug it from the power source.
The lamp housing is located at the rear of the microscope and contains a 6V, 30W bulb.
To access the bulb, squeeze the lamp housing cover and gently work it free. You can then remove and replace the bulb before reinstalling the cover.
We have a separate video demonstrating the complete bulb replacement procedure, which we’ll also link in the description.
Final Thoughts
The Olympus BX45 is a versatile and durable microscope that can be configured for a wide range of laboratory applications.
For pathology, the combination of an ergonomic tilting head, wide-field 10x eyepieces, and 2x, 4x, 10x, 20x, and 40x objectives provides an excellent setup for comfortable everyday use.
