Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, we’re going to talk about the lamp housings used on the Olympus BX40 microscope, including how to identify the original lamp housing, recognize potential problems, and install the updated replacement.

Original Olympus U-LS30 Lamp Housing

The original lamp housing used on the Olympus BX40 is the U-LS30.

You’ll notice that this original lamp housing has a fairly simple, square-shaped design.

The halogen bulb fits into the socket inside the housing, which then attaches to the rear of the microscope.

This system uses a 6V, 30W halogen bulb.

The original U-LS30 lamp housing is no longer manufactured, so if you’re looking for a replacement, you’ll want to use the updated version.

Updated U-LS30-4 Lamp Housing

The replacement lamp housing is the Olympus U-LS30-4.

Although it looks different from the original square-shaped U-LS30, it serves the same purpose and is designed to work with the Olympus BX40.

The updated lamp housing includes an improved socket assembly and a heat filter.

It also uses the same 6V, 30W halogen bulb.

We frequently get questions from customers who notice that the replacement lamp housing doesn’t look like the original one on their microscope.

That’s perfectly normal. The U-LS30-4 is the updated replacement design.

Troubleshooting a BX40 With No Illumination

One common issue we see with the Olympus BX40 involves the microscope powering on but producing no illumination.

There are several possible causes, including:

  • A burned-out halogen bulb
  • A defective lamp socket
  • A missing or disconnected lamp housing
  • A missing bulb

Here’s a useful troubleshooting observation.

If you turn on the microscope and the illumination indicator remains fully illuminated, but the light intensity cannot be adjusted, that may indicate a problem with the bulb or lamp housing assembly.

For example, if the lamp housing is completely disconnected, you may see this behavior even though the microscope itself is receiving power.

It’s a good indication that you should inspect the bulb, socket, and lamp housing connections.

Removing the Original Lamp Housing

Replacing the lamp housing is a relatively simple procedure.

First, turn the microscope off and unplug it from the electrical outlet.

Allow the lamp housing and bulb to cool completely before handling them.

At the rear of the microscope, locate the existing lamp housing.

Place your fingers along the sides of the housing, press inward as needed to release it, and gently wiggle the assembly while pulling it away from the microscope.

The lamp housing should slide out of its mounting connection.

Once removed, you can inspect the socket and bulb or replace the entire assembly.

Installing the Replacement U-LS30-4

Now we’ll install the updated lamp housing.

The replacement has alignment pins and guideways that correspond with the mounting connection on the microscope.

These guides make it easy to position the lamp housing correctly.

Align the pins with the appropriate openings and gently press the replacement housing into position until it is fully seated.

There’s no need to force the assembly. When everything is aligned properly, it should fit securely into place.

Testing the New Lamp Housing

Once the new lamp housing has been installed, reconnect the microscope to its power source.

Turn the microscope on and check the illumination.

In our demonstration, the microscope originally had no lamp housing installed, and the illumination indicator remained fully illuminated.

After installing the replacement housing with a working bulb and socket, the microscope illuminates normally again.

This confirms that the new lamp housing is functioning properly.

Replacement Halogen Bulbs

The Olympus BX40 uses a 6V, 30W halogen bulb.

If your lamp housing is still in good condition and only the bulb has failed, you may not need to replace the entire assembly.

Replacement bulbs are available separately and can be installed in the existing compatible lamp housing.

We’ll include a link to the correct replacement bulb in the video description.

Why the Replacement Looks Different

One of the most common questions we receive is why the replacement lamp housing doesn’t look like the original.

The original U-LS30 has a square-shaped housing, while the updated U-LS30-4 has a different design.

Even though the appearance has changed, the replacement performs the same basic function and is intended to replace the older assembly.

If you’re searching online for the original U-LS30, you may have difficulty finding one. And if you do locate one, it’s likely to be an older, used component.

For that reason, we recommend using the updated replacement when appropriate.

Final Thoughts

If your Olympus BX40 microscope powers on but the halogen illumination isn’t working, start by checking the bulb and lamp housing.

A failed bulb, defective socket, or disconnected lamp housing may be responsible for the problem.

Replacing the original U-LS30 with the updated U-LS30-4 can be a straightforward way to restore illumination without replacing the microscope.
