Hi, this is Walker and Maria with Munday Scientific. Today, we’re going to show you how to install a fluorescence attachment on an Olympus BX Series microscope.
In this demonstration, we’re using an Olympus BX51, but the installation process is similar for other microscopes in the BX Series.
Maria will be assisting by pointing out the tools and components needed throughout the installation.
Tools and Equipment Required
Before you begin, gather the following items:
- Olympus BX Series microscope (BX51 shown in this demonstration)
- 3 mm Allen wrench (stored in the upper-right corner of the microscope stand)
- 4 mm Allen wrench (a T-handle wrench is recommended for additional leverage)
- Small pick tool or similar pointed instrument
- Fluorescence attachment
- Fluorescence lamp house
Having all of the necessary tools ready before starting will make the installation much easier.
Removing the Nosepiece and Microscope Head
Begin by removing the microscope nosepiece.
Using the 3 mm Allen wrench, loosen the retaining screw a few turns, then slide the nosepiece off the microscope and set it aside.
Next, remove the microscope head.
This video assumes the head has already been removed. If you’re unsure how to perform this step, Munday Scientific has additional videos that demonstrate the head removal process.
Set the microscope head aside, as it will be reinstalled later.
Removing the Original Top Plate
The original top plate is secured with several bolts that are covered by adhesive caps.
Using the pick tool, carefully remove each adhesive cap and place it beside its corresponding bolt so it won’t be misplaced.
Next, use the 4 mm Allen wrench to remove the mounting bolts.
Once all of the bolts have been removed, support the top plate from underneath and carefully lift it off the microscope stand.
Set the original top plate aside.
Preparing the Fluorescence Attachment
Before installing the fluorescence attachment, remove the protective caps covering the captive mounting screws on the attachment.
Again, use the pick tool to carefully lift these caps out without damaging them.
Set them aside for reinstallation later.
Positioning the Fluorescence Attachment
Before placing the attachment onto the microscope stand, turn it over and locate the alignment key on the underside.
You’ll notice a small angled alignment feature that corresponds with a matching key on the microscope stand.
When installing the attachment:
- Align the two keyways.
- Lower the attachment into place.
- Slide it fully toward the back and to the right until it seats properly.
Proper alignment is important to ensure that the optical components remain correctly positioned for the objectives and fluorescence system.
Securing the Attachment
Using the 4 mm Allen wrench, insert the mounting screws through the attachment and thread them into the microscope stand.
Tighten each screw evenly until it is snug.
Avoid overtightening, as excessive force may damage the threads or strip the mounting holes.
Once the attachment is secure, reinstall the protective caps over the mounting screws.
Installing the Fluorescence Lamp House
Next, install the fluorescence lamp house.
Using the 3 mm Allen wrench, tighten the mounting screws located on either side of the attachment.
Again, tighten the screws only until they are snug.
After installation, gently wiggle the lamp house to verify that it is securely mounted and properly aligned.
Reinstalling the Nosepiece
With the fluorescence attachment fully installed, reinstall the microscope nosepiece.
Slide it back into position and tighten the retaining screw using the 3 mm Allen wrench.
The fluorescence attachment is now fully installed and ready for use.
Final Thoughts
Installing a fluorescence attachment on an Olympus BX Series microscope is a straightforward process when the proper tools are used.
The most important steps are:
- Carefully removing the original top plate.
- Properly aligning the fluorescence attachment using the alignment key.
- Tightening all mounting hardware securely without overtightening.
- Verifying that both the attachment and lamp house are firmly installed before returning the microscope to service.
