Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, we’re going to talk about what to do when the LED light starts blinking or strobing on an Olympus BX43 or BX46 microscope.
For this demonstration, we’re using an Olympus BX46.
Why the LED May Start Blinking
Occasionally, the LED illuminator on an Olympus BX43 or BX46 may begin to strobe or blink.
This can happen after the microscope has been left on for extended periods or simply as the LED assembly gets older and approaches the end of its service life. You may begin to see this issue on systems that are around 10 years old or older.
A blinking or strobing light can make it extremely difficult to view and read a specimen, so when this occurs, the LED assembly will typically need to be replaced.
We’ll include information about the correct replacement part in the video description.
Preparing the Microscope
Before replacing the LED, turn the microscope off and unplug it from the power source.
You’ll need a 3 mm Allen wrench for the replacement procedure. Olympus typically includes this wrench with the microscope, and it can usually be found stored on the back of the stand.
Disconnecting the LED
Turn the microscope around so you can access the rear of the stand.
Locate the electrical connection for the LED assembly and unplug it from the microscope.
Removing the LED Assembly
On the right side of the microscope, locate the small access hole for the LED assembly’s retaining screw.
Insert the 3 mm Allen wrench into the hole and loosen the screw.
Once the retaining screw has been loosened, the LED assembly will slide out of the microscope.
Installing the Replacement LED
Take the new LED assembly and slide it into the same opening.
Once it is fully seated:
- Tighten the retaining screw with the 3 mm Allen wrench.
- Reconnect the LED’s electrical plug.
- Plug the microscope back into its power source.
- Turn the microscope on and verify that the illumination is operating properly.
Your Olympus BX43 or BX46 should now have steady illumination again without the distracting blinking or strobing.
Final Thoughts
If the LED illumination on your Olympus BX43 or BX46 begins blinking or strobing, it may be an indication that the LED assembly is reaching the end of its service life.
Fortunately, replacing the assembly is a relatively simple procedure requiring only a 3 mm Allen wrench and the correct replacement LED.
