Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, we’re going to talk about the didymium blue filter, what it does, and where it should be installed on a microscope with halogen illumination.
For this demonstration, we’re using an Olympus BX41 microscope.
What Does the Blue Filter Do?
When you receive a microscope from us, you may find a blue filter included in a packet with the microscope. If you already have your microscope, look for a small piece of glass that may have a slightly mirrored appearance.
Halogen bulbs naturally produce light with a warmer color temperature, which can give the field of view a yellow or orange appearance.
The blue filter helps compensate for this warmer illumination, producing a cooler, whiter light through the microscope.
Installing the Filter on an Olympus BX41
On the Olympus BX41, the blue filter is positioned directly above the dust glass beneath the condenser.
When the filter is placed in the light path, you’ll immediately notice the difference in color temperature. The warmer halogen illumination changes to a cooler, whiter appearance.
Filter Location on Other Microscopes
The exact location of the blue filter will vary depending on the microscope model.
In most cases, the filter will be located somewhere underneath the condenser. Depending on the microscope, it may:
- Rest directly on top of the dust glass
- Fit into a filter holder beneath the condenser
- Insert into the bottom of the condenser assembly
Regardless of the exact mounting method, the purpose is the same: placing the blue filter in the illumination path helps correct the warmer color produced by the halogen bulb.
