Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, we’re going to talk about the didymium blue filter and where it should be installed on a microscope with halogen illumination.
For this demonstration, we’re using an Olympus BX41 microscope.
Purpose of the Blue Filter
When you receive a microscope from us, you may find this filter included in a packet with the microscope. If you already have your microscope, look for a small piece of glass that may have a slightly mirrored appearance.
A halogen bulb naturally produces light with a warmer color temperature. The purpose of the blue filter is to alter the appearance of that illumination, producing a cooler, whiter light through the microscope.
Installing the Filter on an Olympus BX41
On the Olympus BX41, the blue filter is placed directly above the dust glass beneath the condenser.
When the filter is inserted, you’ll immediately notice a change in the color of the illumination. The warmer halogen light takes on a cooler, whiter appearance.
Filter Location on Other Microscopes
The exact location of the blue filter can vary depending on the microscope model.
In most cases, you’ll find the filter positioned underneath the condenser. Depending on the microscope, it may:
- Rest directly on the dust glass
- Insert into a filter holder beneath the condenser
- Fit into the bottom portion of the condenser assembly
