Unitron Z645 Microscope Setup with Schott Illumination

Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific and Microscope Marketplace. Today we’re going to talk about this Unatron Z645 stereoscope. We’ve done quite a few videos on these lately. This particular customer purchased the scope with this configuration and plans to use their own boom stand. We have it mounted here simply as an example to demonstrate the setup.

Michael is going to come in, and we’ll walk through a few of the key features.

Camera Adapter and Parfocal Adjustment

This scope is equipped with a camera adapter that can be removed using a 3 mm Allen wrench—one screw on each side. Once loosened, the adapter slides right off.

This is an adjustable, focusable camera adapter. After it’s locked in place, you can rotate this collar. This is important because you want to first bring your specimen into focus through the eyepieces. If you have a camera attached, you can then look at your computer screen and rotate this collar to make the image parfocal. That way, what you see through the eyepieces is exactly what you see on the camera.

Zoom Range and Front Lens Protection

The scope features a 0.67x to 4.5x zoom range, which makes it very versatile.

On the front, there is a threaded protector that serves two purposes. First, it protects the front lenses—there is glass inside for protection. Second, it allows you to attach a ring light if you choose to do so. It’s a simple and effective design that adds flexibility.

Eyepieces and Diopter Adjustment

The eyepieces are secured with thumb screws and can be removed easily. Both eyepieces are focusable.

You’ll notice a small white dot on each eyepiece. Line that dot up with the zero mark—this is a great starting point and represents roughly 20/20 vision on each side. From there, if you have any vision correction needs, you can fine-tune each eyepiece accordingly.

LED Dual Light Source Overview

We’re going to swing this scope out of the way and talk about another component this customer wanted: the Schott Easy LED dual light source.

This is an excellent product and runs around $650, with additional cost for the table stand and mounting bracket. While that makes it slightly more expensive, it’s a fantastic power supply and well worth it for many applications.

Light Controls and Brightness Adjustment

With this dual light source, you can:

  • Press the button once to activate light on one side
  • Press it again to activate the other side
  • Press it a third time to turn both lights on

The rheostat is located right here and allows you to adjust brightness up and down. Since this is an LED source, it provides bright, consistent illumination without generating excess heat.

Power Adapters and Global Compatibility

This power supply comes with multiple power adapters, allowing it to be used anywhere in the world. You simply swap out the adapter at the outlet. Right now, we have a U.S. plug installed, but international adapters are included.

The unit is mounted on a stand here. While the stand is optional, we believe it’s a very nice feature and adds stability and convenience.

Lighting Flexibility and Use Cases

This setup gives the user excellent control over lighting. You can bring light in from the side, use a more reflected lighting approach, or position the lights to create additional shading and contrast. This flexibility makes it ideal for detailed inspection work.

For affordability and performance, this is one of my favorite stereoscope setups right now. It’s absolutely fantastic for the price.
