Good morning. This is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, we’re going to use this Leica MZ16 stereo microscope to show you how to make sure everything remains properly parfocal throughout the zoom range.

A common issue with zoom stereo microscopes is losing focus as you increase or decrease magnification. Fortunately, checking and adjusting parfocality is a fairly simple procedure.

When I first started working with microscopes, this was something I struggled with, so we wanted to put together a quick video showing you how to do it correctly.

Bring the Specimen Into Focus

The first step is to place a specimen under the microscope and bring it into focus.

For this demonstration, we’re simply going to use an envelope as our specimen.

Secure the specimen on the base, then use the microscope’s focus control to bring the image into sharp focus.

Check the Eyepiece Diopter Settings

Next, check the diopter adjustment on each eyepiece.

The diopter adjustments allow you to compensate for differences in your eyesight. Each eyepiece has a reference point and a zero setting.

If you have 20/20 vision, you’ll typically want both eyepieces set to zero. Depending on the eyepiece, you may see a line indicating the zero position, along with positive and negative adjustment markings.

Make sure both eyepieces are set equally at zero before proceeding.

If your vision requires correction, you may need to adjust the diopters accordingly rather than leaving them at zero.

Focus at the Highest Magnification

Once the eyepieces are properly adjusted, zoom the microscope all the way in to its highest magnification.

At maximum magnification, use the microscope’s focus control to bring the specimen into sharp focus.

It’s important to establish your primary focus at the highest magnification because this provides the most precise point for setting and checking parfocality.

Check Focus Throughout the Zoom Range

Once the specimen is sharply focused at maximum magnification, slowly zoom the microscope back out.

The specimen should remain in focus throughout the entire zoom range.

You can then zoom back in and verify that the image continues to remain sharp without requiring significant refocusing.

If the image remains in focus as you move from low to high magnification and back again, the microscope is properly parfocal.

What If the Microscope Doesn’t Stay in Focus?

If you’re losing focus as you move through the zoom range, there may be another issue that needs to be addressed.

Possible causes can include:

  • Incorrectly adjusted eyepiece diopters
  • The front lens being used with the microscope
  • Vision correction required for the individual user
  • Another component in the optical system affecting parfocality

Checking the eyepiece settings and making sure the microscope is properly configured can often help identify the source of the problem.

Final Thoughts

This particular Leica MZ16 is perfectly parfocal and is getting ready to go out the door to its new owner.

Once you know the proper procedure, checking parfocality on a zoom stereo microscope is quick and straightforward:

  1. Place your specimen under the microscope.
  2. Verify the eyepiece diopter settings.
  3. Zoom to maximum magnification.
  4. Bring the specimen into sharp focus.
  5. Zoom through the entire magnification range.
  6. Confirm that the specimen remains in focus.
