Hi, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today we’re going to talk about the Olympus IIX microscope head—specifically, the U-BI90CT model. The “CT”stands for centering telescope.

This type of head is commonly found on many Olympus EX and GX series microscopes. Let’s go over the key positions and functions.

  • This is your standard viewing position.
  • This is the centering telescope position, used for aligning phase rings.
  • And this is the shield position, which blocks all incoming light.

The “0” position refers to the standard brightfield viewing mode, allowing you to view your specimen under normal illumination.

If you’re working with an EX model and need to align the phase rings, you’ll use the centering telescope. Rotate it into place and then use the focusing ring to bring the phase rings into sharp view. This makes aligning the phase contrast rings much easier and more precise.

This particular head has been marked G2G, which means our technician Danny has tested, aligned, and certified it as ready to go. We keep this model in stock along with other EX series components.

The U-BI90CT head also includes a diopter tube, allowing you to adjust the eyepieces for individual vision differences. That’s especially helpful if you have a slight correction in one eye. While many Olympus microscopes come with two fixed eyepieces, the diopter allows for personalized focusing, improving your viewing comfort and image clarity.

The interpupillary distance adjusts smoothly on both sides, ensuring a comfortable fit for different users.

That’s about it for this overview. If you need help with installing, removing, or disassembling the head, we have several other videos that walk you through those steps.
