Olympus SZX7: Teardown and Setup Guide

Hi, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today we’re going to talk about an Olympus SCX7 stereo microscope that’s heading out the door. Brandon is going to join me, and we’ll go over this microscope briefly. It’s a pretty simple setup. The only tool you’ll need is a 3mm Allen wrench.

Removing the Eyepieces and Head

Between the eyepieces, there’s a 3mm screw. If you spread the eyepieces apart, you can access the screw more easily. Always keep a hand on the head when removing it.

The eyepieces are secured with thumb screws, and both eyepieces are focusable, allowing you to bring the specimen into sharp focus.

Camera Adapter and Parfocal Adjustment

The camera adapter attaches and detaches with a screw.
You can parfocal the camera by loosening the lock screw and rotating the focus. This adjustment ensures that what you see through the eyepieces matches what you see on the camera.

To send light to the camera, pull the rod located on the side. A diagram on the microscope shows this function.

Zoom and Objective Lens

This stereoscope offers a zoom range from 1x to 7x.
The front lens threads off—it’s a Plan Apo 1x objective, which provides excellent optical quality.

Pod and Zoom Options

To remove the pod, loosen the thumb screw. The pod itself is the main microscope body, and it rotates smoothly.

If you prefer click stops instead of a progressive zoom, rotate the ring down. You’ll feel and hear it click at positions like 1.25, 1.6, 2, and so on.

Stand and Illumination Options

This microscope is mounted on a Unatron stand.
It includes both coarse and fine focus controls, as well as reflected light.

The base comes with a black plate, a white plate, and a glass plate.

  • The white or black plate can be used with reflected light.
  • The glass plate allows transmitted light, with illumination coming from below.

The reflected light comes from the lamp positioned at the front of the stand.

Reassembly Instructions

When you receive the microscope, it will be fully disassembled.

  1. Place the pod into the pod carrier.
  2. Thread on the front lens. If the threads catch, don’t force it—just back it off and start again.
  3. Ensure the flange sits properly under the guide tabs.
  4. Never remove your hand from the head until you know it’s secure. Sometimes the head feels tight even when it isn’t completely flush, and it could topple if you let go too early.
