Olympus BX43 Microscope Overview

Read the Edited Video Transcript for ‘Olympus BX43 Microscope Overview’

Hi, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today we’re preparing to ship an Olympus BX43 microscope. This unit is a little different from the typical BX43 because it has a gout kit installed. We partnered with Spectra Services in New York on this one—we work closely with them, and together we’ve set this scope up for the customer.

Walker’s going to join me as we go through the components.

Head & Eyepieces

  • Tilting Binocular Head – Provides ergonomic positioning.
  • 10x / 22 mm Field of View Eyepieces – Wide-field eyepieces for comfortable viewing.
  • Left-Side Diopter Adjustment – Allows each eye to be brought into independent focus.

Nosepiece & Analyzer

  • Six-Position Nosepiece – Includes an analyzer slot.
  • UAN Analyzer (Gout Analyzer) – Insert the analyzer fully and slide the lever to engage.
  • Polarizer – Located above the dust glass. When in place, you can cross the poles.
    • To use: push the analyzer in, place the polarizer above the dust glass, then rotate the polarizer until the field of view goes dark.
    • Once dark, slide the analyzer back and forth to achieve proper crossed polarization.

Stage & Objectives

  • Objectives Installed: 10x, 20x, 40x, 50x (oil, with iris diaphragm for contrast), and 100x oil.
  • Left-Handed Stage – Most BX43 scopes ship with right-handed stages, but this customer requested left-handed controls.
  • Slide Holder – Standard removable slide holder.

The stage can be removed to access the substage bracket.

Substage & Condenser

  • Polarizer – As discussed earlier, sits above the dust glass.
  • Condenser Adjustment – Knobs on each side raise and lower it.
  • Condenser Removal – A thumb screw releases it.
  • Condenser Centering – Two adjustment knobs allow centering for the 10x objective and Köhler illumination.
  • Field Diaphragm – Included for Köhler illumination setup.

Fine Focus Adjustment

Because this scope has a left-handed stage, the fine focus knob was moved to the right side.

  • To switch sides:
    1. Insert a 3 mm Allen wrench into the side port and pop the knob off.
    2. Remove the small sticker on the opposite side.
    3. Move the knob over and cover the empty port with the sticker to keep dust out.

Assembly Instructions

When shipped, the scope will arrive disassembled. Here’s how to reassemble it:

  1. Install the Condenser
    • Lower the substage.
    • Insert the condenser and secure with the thumb screw.
  2. Attach the Stage
    • Position it level and lock it in place.
    • Be sure the stage screw is backed out far enough so it sits flush; otherwise, the stage may tilt, causing uneven focus.
  3. Insert the Nosepiece
    • Slide it in on the dovetail mount.
    • Lock it using the Allen screw.
  4. Insert the Analyzer (UAN)
    • Push it in until it reaches the click stop.
    • Optionally lock it in with the screw if you want it always in the optical path.
  5. Install the Head
    • Position the flange under the two notches.
    • Lock it into place securely.

Power Supply

This scope uses a 5V power supply.

  • Important: Do not confuse it with a 15V supply used on scopes with bridges.
  • The jacks look identical, but plugging in the wrong supply can burn out the electronics. Always trace the power supply to the wall and confirm it reads 5V.
