Nikon SMZ745 Stereo Microscope Overview

Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today we’re going to talk about one of our favorite little stereoscopes—the Nikon SMZ745 Stereo Microscope. Michael’s going to come in, and we’re going to show you a couple of things about it.

The Nikon SMZ745 Stereo Microscope is great for industrial applications or just basic stereoscope use. It comes with 10x eyepieces that have a 22 mm field of view. On a stereoscope, both eyepieces are usually focusable, so you’ll want to make sure they’re both set to zero as a good starting point. The interpupillary distance adjusts smoothly.

I really like these microscopes—they’re well-sealed, which is ideal for industrial environments where dust and debris can be an issue. Whether you’re working with oil injectors, spark plugs, or in a foundry, this scope stays clean on the inside thanks to its sealed construction.

It has a 0.67x to 5x zoom magnification range, and the zoom mechanism operates very smoothly. It’s a progressive zoom by default, but if you look on the back, there’s a small hole. You can insert a 2 mm Allen wrench into that hole and rotate it to enable click stops.

Let me bring the mic closer so you can hear it. [clicking sound] Now it clicks into the magnification positions—so when you’re at 1x magnification, you’ll feel the click and know you’re set.

Conclusion for the SMZ745

That’s basically it for the Nikon SMZ745 Stereo Microscope. You can also get different auxiliary objective lenses for the front, which screw in and give you additional working distance. If you prefer a different stand, this one is just a standard plain stand, but you can add a ring light for better illumination. There’s a lot you can do with this microscope—it can even be used in embryology or medical applications, although we primarily sell them for industrial use.
