Microscope Has No Light

Read the Edited Video Transcript for ‘Microscope Has No Light’

Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, we had a service call about a light not working on a Nikon microscope. We’re going to demonstrate the same principle using an Olympus microscope, since this is one of the most common issues we get calls about.

Mike is going to step in here. This microscope is powered on, and the light intensity is turned all the way up. But if you look, there’s no light coming through.

The customer called earlier and said, “The light isn’t working—come take a look.” We walked them through a few steps, but they still couldn’t figure it out.

So here’s the issue: this is your field diaphragm. It’s used for several things, like setting up Köhler illumination or adding contrast. In this case, it was closed all the way down. We’re going to open it up—and there’s the light!

So, often your microscope isn’t actually broken. This is one of the first and easiest things to check.

Another Place to Look

Another simple thing: let’s look at the back of the microscope. As silly as it may sound, make sure your power cord is fully plugged in. Trace it from the microscope all the way to the wall outlet. We’re going to unplug it here just to show you.

If there’s still no light, the issue could be:

  1. The field diaphragm is closed.
  2. The rheostat or light intensity dial is turned all the way down.
  3. The power cord is unplugged, either from the microscope or the wall.
  4. The bulb is burned out.
  5. The lamp socket or lamp housing could be faulty.

These are the top five things to check before calling a service technician. Of course, we’re always happy to help, but checking these first can save everyone time and money.
