Hi, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today we’re going to talk about the Leica M80 stereomicroscope. This unit just sold, so we’ll take it apart, put it back together, and review some of its key features. Michael’s going to join me as we go through it.
Eyepieces & Reticles
- Comes with 10x/23 mm eyepieces.
- Both eyepieces are focusable.
- The line mark indicates the zero position, which can be adjusted for each eye.
- A reticle shelf allows you to add a reticle (often called a micrometer) for measuring.
- To install, unscrew the shelf, insert the reticle, and screw it back in.
Camera Adapter & Head
- Includes a 63 mm camera adapter, which screws on and off the trinocular head with a retaining ring.
- To remove the head:
- Open the interpupillary distance to the widest field.
- Loosen the thumb screw.
- Keep two hands on the head at all times when removing it.
- The flange fits underneath two notches for secure placement when reinstalling.
Zoom & Pod
- The M80 stereoscope provides zoom from 7.5x to 60x.
- It features a progressive zoom with the option for a click stop:
- Push in the button to enable click stops.
- Release it for smooth progressive zoom.
- The pod can be removed using the side thumb screw.
- This scope is equipped with an Acro 1x plan objective.
Base & Illumination
- Shown here with a Unatron transmitted and reflected light base (demo unit).
- The customer will receive a new base with coarse and fine focus.
- Controls:
- On/off switch on the base.
- Left knob controls reflected light (illumination from above).
- Transmitted light is possible by replacing the white plate with a glass plate, allowing illumination from below.
- A ring light can also be added for additional top lighting.
Reassembly
- Insert the pod into the pod carrier.
- Ensure it is seated fully.
- Lock it with the thumb screw.
- Attach the head.
- The lip must fit under the two notches.
- Tighten the screw securely, keeping hands on the head until it is locked.
- Wiggle slightly to confirm it’s tight.
- Reattach the camera adapter and accessories.
Camera Setup
- This customer ordered a Microme 6 camera (made by Tuxen).
- It comes with software and connects via USB 3.0 for easy installation.
- To install:
- Remove the dust plug from the camera.
- Screw the camera adapter into the trinocular port.
- Attach the camera to the adapter.
