There are few things more frustrating than smudges, dust, and oil appearing in your field of view when using your microscope. Below we’ve provided a few tips on how to keep your microscope in good condition between service dates.
Dust Covers are a Great Help
Just covering your microscope when it’s not in use can help tremendously when it comes to keeping it clean. You are much less likely to get dust on the lenses if there is no dust on the microscope.
Canned Air Can Blow Your Troubles Away
Just a blast or two from standard office store canned air is usually enough to get rid of general dust and debris. So before you proceed to the next tip give a quick dusting a try. There are a few things to keep in mind. Purge your duster with a few blasts to the side before you use it on your microscope. If the can has not been stored properly it can sometimes spray some of its internal propellant on the lenses making your issue worse so keep the can upright when stored and when you are using it.
Cotton Swabs are Your Best Friend
Yes, that’s right, the humble cotton swab is the best tool for the job when it comes to that speck of dust or random smudge. While most manufacturers recommend lens paper, years of experience have told us that the Q-tip is king. Just a drop of lens cleaner and a few light swirls will take care of most issues.
