How to Set Up the Unitron Z645 Stereo – Easy Guide

Read the Edited Video Transcript for ‘How to Set Up the Unitron Z645 Stereo – Easy Guide’

Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today we’re going to demonstrate the setup of a Unatron Z645 stereo microscope with a standard plain stand and LED ring light.

We recently received a call from a customer who purchased this microscope and was a little concerned about how difficult it might be to set up. In this video, we’ll show you how easy the setup process really is, and then we’ll talk a bit about the features of this stereoscope.

Unboxing the Ring Light

The first component we’ll look at is the LED ring light.

Inside the box, you’ll find the ring light itself. We won’t remove everything from the packaging, but we’ll take out the main portion so you can see it.

The ring light mounts around the objective lens of the stereoscope. To install it, you simply loosen the small mounting screws, slide it into place, and then tighten the screws to secure it.

One nice feature of these ring lights is that they are generic LED units, which means they work with many different stereoscopes. They are also very easy to install and operate.

We’ll set that aside for now and return to it shortly.

Unboxing the Microscope

Next, we’ll open the box containing the microscope.

The microscope is securely packed in foam, which protects it during shipping. Even though the packaging is well protected, it’s always a good idea to open boxes carefully.

Inside the box you’ll find:

  • The microscope head
  • user manual
  • dust cover
  • The eyepieces

The dust cover is particularly important. Keeping the microscope covered when it’s not in use helps protect it from dust and debris.

Binocular Head Overview

This model is a binocular stereoscope, meaning it has two eyepiece tubes for viewing.

It is not a trinocular model, which means it does not include a third port for attaching a camera. If this were a trinocular version, there would be a camera port located on top of the head.

For this customer’s application, a standard binocular configuration was preferred.

The microscope head comes wrapped in a protective plastic cover, and there will also be protective caps on the optical ports. These caps simply unscrew and remove.

Mounting the Microscope Head

Once the protective caps are removed, the stereoscope is almost ready to install.

The microscope head slides into the mounting post on the stand. Before inserting it, check the thumb screw on the stand. If it is tightened too far, the microscope head may not slide into place.

Simply back the thumb screw out slightly, slide the microscope head into the mounting hole, and then tighten the thumb screw to secure it.

Installing the Eyepieces

Next, we’ll install the eyepieces.

The eyepieces are packaged separately in the box. To install them:

  1. Loosen the eyepiece retaining screws if they are tightened too far.
  2. Slide each eyepiece into the eyepiece tube.
  3. Tighten the screws gently to secure them.

Once the eyepieces are installed, the stereoscope is nearly ready for use.

Installing the Protective Collar and Ring Light

The microscope also includes a protective collar that threads onto the bottom of the microscope head.

The microscope will function without this collar, but installing it provides a mounting surface for accessories, such as the ring light.

To install the ring light:

  1. Slide the ring light onto the collar.
  2. Tighten the small mounting screws.
  3. Connect the ring light controller.
  4. Plug the power adapter into a wall outlet.

Once plugged in, the ring light provides bright, even illumination for viewing specimens.

Using the Stereo Microscope

This stereoscope includes wide-field eyepieces, and both eyepieces are individually focusable, which is an important feature.

Each eyepiece has a diopter adjustment scale. To begin, align the zero marking with the white dot on both eyepieces. This serves as the starting point for focus adjustments.

Starting at zero ensures that both eyepieces are balanced for users with normal (20/20) vision. From there, you can fine-tune the focus for your eyes if needed.

Focusing and Zoom

To focus on a specimen:

  1. Place your specimen on the stage plate.
  2. Use the coarse focus knobs to raise or lower the stage until the specimen comes into focus.

The microscope also features a zoom control, allowing you to adjust magnification up to 4.5× zoom.

Applications and Comparisons

The Unatron Z645 stereoscope is an excellent and affordable microscope.
