Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, I’m going to show you how to remove the lamp house on an Olympus IX71 microscope and replace the bulb.

This is a straightforward procedure, but there are a few important safety precautions you’ll want to follow.

Tools You’ll Need

To complete this replacement, you’ll need:

  • A 3 mm Allen wrench
  • A box of Kimwipes or a clean lint-free tissue
  • Gloves (optional but recommended)
  • A replacement Osram 12V 100W HLX bulb (Part Number 64625 HLX)

Many Olympus microscopes include a built-in 3 mm Allen wrench stored on the microscope. If yours isn’t available, a standard Allen wrench set works just as well.

Removing the Lamp House

Begin by loosening the two mounting screws that secure the lamp house to the microscope using the 3 mm Allen wrench.

Always support the lamp house with one hand while removing these screws to prevent it from falling.

Once the screws are loose, carefully remove the lamp house from the microscope.

Disconnecting the Lamp House

Many Olympus IX microscopes are connected to an Olympus TH4 transformer or another external power supply.

Before replacing the bulb:

  • Turn the system off.
  • Unplug the power supply completely.

Next, disconnect the lamp house by rotating the locking connector and gently pulling it free.

Once disconnected, the lamp house is ready to be opened.

Opening the Lamp House

Using the same 3 mm Allen wrench, loosen the retaining screw on the top of the lamp house.

Remove the lamp house cover to expose the bulb inside.

This microscope uses an Osram 12V 100W HLX lamp.

Removing the Old Bulb

Never touch the glass of a microscope bulb with your bare fingers.

Instead, use a Kimwipe, clean tissue, or gloves to handle the bulb.

Press down on the bronze retaining lever to release the bulb, then carefully remove it from the socket.

Dispose of the old bulb properly.

Installing the New Bulb

The replacement bulb is an Osram 12V 100W HLX (64625 HLX).

Open the package carefully, exposing only the metal pins while keeping the glass protected.

Without touching the glass:

  1. Press down on the bronze retaining lever.
  2. Insert the bulb into the socket using the metal pins.
  3. Release the retaining lever to secure the bulb.
  4. Remove the protective plastic sleeve.

The bulb is now properly installed.

Reassembling the Lamp House

Replace the lamp house cover and tighten the retaining screw with the 3 mm Allen wrench until it is snug.

Give the cover a gentle pull to make sure it is securely fastened.

Testing the Bulb

Before reinstalling the lamp house on the microscope, it’s a good idea to reconnect it to the power supply and test the new bulb.

Turn the system on to verify that the bulb illuminates properly.

If everything is working correctly, reinstall the lamp house onto the microscope by following the removal steps in reverse order.

Final Thoughts

Replacing the lamp house bulb on an Olympus IX71 is a simple maintenance procedure that only takes a few minutes.

By avoiding contact with the bulb’s glass and testing the lamp before reinstalling the assembly, you can ensure reliable performance and maximize the life of your new bulb.
