Disassemble a Nikon Ti Microscope
Read the Edited Transcript for ‘Disassemble a Nikon TI Microscope’
Hi, this is Chad with Munday Scientific, and today we’re going to show you how to disassemble a few components on a Nikon TI microscope. This particular unit is about to be shipped out via freight for safety, so we’re going to walk you through the disassembly process — which will also help you understand how to reassemble it once you receive it.
Step 1: Remove the Head
First, we have our Allen wrench set ready. You’ll need a couple of different sizes for this process.
Whenever we ship a microscope, we always remove the head.
- Use a 2 mm Allen wrench and insert it into the screw hole located here.
- Loosen and remove the screw, then carefully set the head aside.
The microscope is currently plugged in for testing, so we’ll go ahead and turn it off and unplug it.
Step 2: Remove the Stage
Next, we’ll remove the stage.
To do this:
- Tilt the illumination arm back using this lever right here.
- Then locate the four screws securing the stage.
- Use a 4 mm Allen wrench to remove them.
Tip: We prefer ball-end Allen wrenches — they make tight screws easier to manage. If a screw is especially tight, use the short end of the wrench for more leverage to get it started.
Once the screws are out:
- You can place them in a small bag or tape them down somewhere safe to avoid losing them.
- There is also a locator pin underneath the stage — this pin aligns with the matching hole on the frame to help ensure the stage is seated flush when reinstalling.
Step 3: Remove the Illumination Arm
After the stage is off, we’ll move on to the illumination arm.
- Use the same 4 mm Allen wrench and remove the screws on both sides.
Important: Keep one hand on the column while removing the final screw to prevent the arm from dropping. It’s best to have two people handling this step — one to support the arm and one to remove the screws.
These screws are long-threaded, so it might take a little time to get them out. Once they’re removed, the illumination arm will slide off easily.
Optional: Additional Disassembly
You can also remove the condenser, lamp house, or other parts if needed, especially for freight shipping. However, we try to minimize disassembly to make reassembly easier for the customer, while still ensuring the unit is safe and secure during transit.
