Set the Click Stop on Olympus SZX Microscopes

Hey, what’s going on? This is Chad with Munday Scientific. I just got a call from a customer who had a question about their Olympus SCX microscope. They mentioned that when they used the zoom, it was a progressive zoom — meaning it moved smoothly — but it wasn’t stopping at the standard magnification points. They wanted to know how to enable the click stop so it would lock into place at specific magnification levels.
Here’s how to adjust that:
Use a 3 mm Allen wrench on this screw right here.
- If the screw is backed all the way out, the zoom will feel completely smooth — no resistance.
- If you tighten the screw, it will engage the click stop, causing the zoom to lock firmly into each magnification setting.

This procedure is very common across most stereo microscopes.
For example:
- Leica stereo microscopes typically have a selector switch — you push it one way or the other to engage or disengage the click stop.
- Nikon models often use a similar setup to this Olympus SCX — where you adjust the click stop with a wrench.
