BX50 Maintenance: Changing the Bulb and Filters
Read the Edited Video Transcript for ‘BX50 Maintenance: Changing the Bulb and Filters’
Hi, this is Chad with Munday Scientific.
Today, we want to show you a couple of things on an Olympus BX50 microscope. We don’t see these go out the door much anymore, so the person who purchased this one got a really good deal.
In this video, we’ll cover two key things — some built-in filter features and how to remove and replace the lamp house. Mike’s going to help demonstrate.
Filter Sliders Overview
Most of our other videos show how to take the microscope apart or put it together, but for this one, we’ll focus on a few specific features.
You’ll notice these sliders on the base:
- This one is for the Daylight Blue Filter (LBD).
- These two are for Neutral Density (ND) filters.
Let’s plug the microscope in and take a look.
Demonstrating the Filters
Mike, go ahead and show the light.
When the filter is flipped in, you’ll see that nice, white, clear light you’re used to.
When the filter is flipped out, the light takes on a yellow hue.
This setup works just like placing a didymium or blue filter directly over the light source, but on the BX50, it’s conveniently built into the base. It’s a really nice feature.
Removing the Lamp House
Now, we’ll show you how to remove the lamp house.
You’ll need a 3mm Allen wrench, which is located in the top of the microscope.
To remove the lamp house:
- Insert the wrench into the screw hole right here.
- Rotate it to loosen.
- Make sure the microscope is unplugged and turned off.
- Gently wiggle and pull the lamp house out — it should come right off.
To put it back on, simply:
- Push the lamp house back into place.
- Snap it in.
- Tighten the screw again with the wrench.
Changing the Bulb
We have another video that shows this in more detail, but here’s a quick overview.
- Use the same 3mm Allen wrench to remove the top of the lamp house.
- Press down the two metal prongs to release the old bulb.
- Pull the bulb out carefully.
- Insert the new bulb and release the prongs to secure it.
⚠️ Important:
- Avoid touching the bulb with your bare fingers.
- Use gloves, a Kimwipe, or the bulb wrapper when handling it.
Touching the bulb can shorten its lifespan and may cause a burning or oily odor when it heats up.
