BX43 Dual Head Pathology Microscope

Read the Edited Video Transcript for ‘BX43 Dual Head Pathology Microscope’

Hello, this is CH with Munday Scientific.
Today, we have an Olympus BX53 dual-head pathology scope going out. Michael will be joining us to go over this scope. This particular configuration was built for a pathologist who requested two tilting heads.

Importance of the Focusable Eyepiece

For a scope like this, it is very important to have a focusable eyepiece on the back side, specifically on the non-diopter tube side.

  • When the driver’s side (front) head is brought into focus, the passenger side (back) user can make adjustments with the diopter tube and fixed eyepiece.
  • The focusable eyepiece allows them to make corrections so both users can see the same image clearly while discussing the specimen.

Bridge and Power Supply

This system uses a front-to-back bridge.

  • Be very careful with the power supply connections. There are two jacks: one for 5V and one for 15V. They look identical but are labeled.
  • If you mix them up (for example, plugging 5V into the 15V port or vice versa), it will short out the system.
  • Always double-check that the correct power supply is plugged into the correct port before turning it on.

The rheostat controls illumination:

  • All the way up = red arrow.
  • All the way down = green arrow.
  • Middle = no illumination to the arrow.

This allows both the driver and passenger to control illumination and pointing.

Bridge and Head Options

Often, you will see a trinocular head on one side of these dual-head scopes. This allows for the addition of a camera, which is useful since the secondary observer is not always seated at the scope.

Objectives and Stage

For this pathologist, the scope is equipped with the following objectives: 2x, 4x, 10x, 20x, and 40x.

  • The stage uses right-hand coaxial controls.
  • The flip-out condenser can be used to fill the field at low magnification (2x).
  • The field diaphragm is used to set up Köhler illumination.
  • If the stage or focus drifts downward, you can tighten the tension ring to correct it.

Extra Parts Ordered

This customer requested additional parts:

  • Another dual-head bridge for a different scope.
  • A seven-position nosepiece, allowing all objectives to be mounted at once.
  • A six-position nosepiece as well.
  • Analyzer slot and attachments for polarized light work (used for examining gout crystals and other specimens).
    • The analyzer fits into the holder.
    • The polarizer sits above the dust glass.
    • Both are required for proper polarized light microscopy.
