Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, we’re going to talk about the Olympus CK2 microscope and show you how to assemble and disassemble it.
When you receive this microscope from us, it will be shipped partially disassembled to help protect the components during transit. We’ll go through the major pieces and show you how everything fits back together.
Removing and Installing the Specimen Holder
If your microscope includes a slide holder or specimen holder, it will typically be removed for shipping.
The holder is secured by two knurled screws located underneath the stage.
To remove the holder, simply loosen the two screws. They’re normally only finger-tight, but each screw also has a slot that allows you to use a flathead screwdriver if necessary.
Once both screws are loosened, the specimen holder will lift off the stage.
Installation is simply the reverse process. Position the holder correctly on the stage and tighten the two screws until they are secure.
Removing and Installing the Microscope Head
The microscope head is secured by a thumbscrew and flange.
To install the head, position the flange underneath the two retaining prongs and tighten the thumbscrew.
Always keep one hand on the microscope head while tightening it to prevent it from slipping or falling.
Once the thumbscrew is secure, gently wiggle the head to verify that it is firmly attached.
Installing the Phase Slider
The phase slider will also be removed when the microscope is shipped.
Depending on the microscope’s configuration, the slider will typically include positions corresponding to the objectives being used. On this particular microscope, we have 10x and 20x phase objectives, along with a position for the 4x objective.
The phase slider aligns the appropriate phase rings with the corresponding objectives.
Make sure the correct phase position is selected for the objective you’re using.
Installing the Filter
The microscope also has a position for a colored filter.
Depending on the configuration, this may include:
- A daylight blue filter
- A clear or blank filter
- A green/yellow filter, as shown on this microscope
The filter simply installs in its designated holder in the illumination system.
Removing the Illuminator Column
The illuminator column is another component that we always remove before shipping the microscope.
Before removing the column, locate the electrical connection on the back. This socket connection will be unplugged when the column is removed.
When reinstalling the column, remember to reconnect this plug so the microscope’s illumination system will operate.
Removing the Column From the Microscope
For this procedure, you’ll need a 3 mm Allen wrench.
Before tilting or moving the microscope, it’s a good idea to remove any loose filter from the illuminator so it doesn’t fall out.
Locate the two mounting screws that secure the column to the microscope.
Using the 3 mm Allen wrench, loosen and remove these screws while keeping your other hand firmly on the column for support.
Once the screws have been removed, the column can be lifted away from the microscope.
Reinstalling and Aligning the Column
Reinstalling the illuminator column is straightforward because Olympus incorporated alignment pins into the assembly.
On the bottom of the column, you’ll see locating pins that correspond with matching holes in the microscope base.
Align the pins with these holes and lower the column into position.
Because the alignment is preset by these locating pins, the column should automatically sit in the proper position.
Once it’s seated correctly, reinstall the two mounting screws and tighten them securely with the 3 mm Allen wrench.
Finally, reconnect the electrical plug on the back of the microscope so the illumination system will function.
Final Assembly Check
Once your Olympus CK2 has been assembled, verify that:
- The specimen holder is securely attached.
- The microscope head is properly seated and tightened.
- The phase slider is installed correctly.
- The appropriate filter is in place.
- The illuminator column is securely mounted.
- The illuminator’s electrical connection has been reconnected.
Give each installed component a gentle check to make sure everything is secure before using the microscope.
