Hey, this is Chad with Munday Scientific. Today, I’m going to show you how to adjust the mechanical stage tension on an Olympus BX microscope.
Adjusting the stage tension allows you to customize how easily the stage moves while scanning a specimen, making the controls feel more comfortable and precise for your personal preference.
Understanding the Stage Controls
The Olympus BX microscope uses a coaxial stage control, which consists of two concentric knobs:
- Upper ring: Controls the Y-axis (forward and backward movement)
- Lower ring: Controls the X-axis (left and right movement)
Each control has its own adjustable tension.
Adjusting the Tension
To adjust the stage tension, gently separate the two control rings so you can access the adjustment mechanism.
For both the X-axis and Y-axis controls:
- Turn the adjustment clockwise (to the right) to increase the tension.
- Turn the adjustment counterclockwise (to the left) to decrease the tension.
Make small adjustments until the stage moves with the amount of resistance that feels most comfortable for your work.
Finishing the Adjustment
Once you’ve found the desired tension, press the control rings back together.
Your stage controls are now adjusted and ready to use.
