Hi, this is Walker Kelly with Munday Scientific Instrument Service. Today, Maria and I are going to show you how to install a U-TRU or U-TRU S camera port on an Olympus BX Series microscope.

In this demonstration, we’re using an Olympus BX41, but the installation procedure is similar for other Olympus BX Series microscopes.

What You’ll Need

Before getting started, gather the following components:

  • Olympus BX41 microscope (or another BX Series model)
  • Olympus U-TRU or U-TRU S camera port
  • Camera with the appropriate camera adapter installed
  • 3 mm Allen wrench (stored on the microscope stand)

If you’re installing a U-TRU S, you’ll also need the spacer (riser) that mounts beneath the camera port. This spacer allows the camera to sit flush behind the microscope.

Removing the Microscope Head

Locate the 3 mm Allen wrench, which is stored on the upper-right side of the microscope stand.

Using the wrench, loosen the retaining screw located beside the microscope head.

Once the screw has been loosened, carefully lift the head off the microscope and set it aside.

Installing the U-TRU or U-TRU S

If you’re using a U-TRU S, verify that the spacer is installed on the bottom of the camera port before mounting it to the microscope.

Position the camera port on top of the microscope stand with the camera opening facing the rear of the microscope.

Using the same retaining screw that secured the microscope head, tighten the camera port into place with the 3 mm Allen wrench.

Tighten the screw until it is snug, but do not overtighten.

Reinstalling the Microscope Head

Next, reinstall the microscope head.

Slide the head into the dovetail mount on top of the U-TRU or U-TRU S.

Using the front retaining screw, tighten the head securely with the 3 mm Allen wrench.

Again, the screw only needs to be snug to hold the head firmly in place.

Attaching the Camera

With the camera port installed, you’re ready to mount the camera.

Slide the camera adapter’s dovetail into the matching dovetail slot on the back of the U-TRU or U-TRU S.

Tighten the small silver locking screw to secure the camera.

Before tightening completely, verify that the camera is properly aligned and sits parallel to the microscope base.

Once everything is aligned, tighten the locking screw until the camera is firmly secured.

Final Thoughts

Installing a U-TRU or U-TRU S camera port is a quick upgrade that allows you to add digital imaging capabilities to your Olympus BX Series microscope.

The installation process consists of:

  1. Removing the microscope head.
  2. Installing the U-TRU or U-TRU S camera port.
  3. Reinstalling the microscope head.
  4. Mounting and aligning the camera.

With the installation complete, your microscope is ready for digital imaging and documentation.
