Olympus Fluorescence Microscope Head and Lamphouse Removal

Read the Edited Video Transcript for ‘Olympus Fluorescence Microscope Head and Lamphouse Removal’

Hi everybody, I’m Walker Kelly with Munday Scientific Instrument Service. Today, we’re going to show you how to remove the viewing head and fluorescence lamp house from an Olympus BX-series microscope.

Before we begin, let’s identify a few of the key components you’ll be working with.

  • The viewing head is located on the top of the microscope.
  • The fluorescence lamp house is mounted on the back of the microscope.
  • The fluorescence illuminator connects to the microscope using a dovetail flange.
  • The most important tool you’ll need is the built-in 3 mm Allen wrench.

A quick tip: always return the wrench to its holder when you’re finished. If it gets lost, it can be difficult to replace.

Removing the Fluorescence Illuminator

We’ll start by removing the fluorescence illuminator.

  1. Remove the built-in 3 mm Allen wrench.
  2. Locate the retaining screw on one side of the fluorescence illuminator.
  3. There is a matching screw on the opposite side of the microscope.
  4. While supporting the illuminator with one hand, loosen both screws a few turns.

Important: Do not completely remove the screws.

Once both screws have been loosened, the illuminator will become free.

Carefully slide the illuminator straight back and off the microscope.

You’ll notice a dovetail groove where the retaining screws sit. This groove helps prevent the illuminator from falling off during normal use.

Set the illuminator aside in a safe location.

Removing the Viewing Head

Next, we’ll remove the microscope head.

You’ll notice a screw near the head assembly, but that is not the screw we’re looking for.

Instead:

  1. Locate the gap between the viewing head and the microscope body.
  2. Feel for the access hole in this gap.
  3. Insert the 3 mm Allen wrench.
  4. Loosen the retaining screw a few turns.

Again, you do not need to remove the screw completely.

Once loosened, the head should slide off easily.

Carefully lift the head off and place it in a safe location.

Storing the Allen Wrench

After removing the head, return the Allen wrench to its storage location so it doesn’t get misplaced.

Conclusion

And that’s how to remove the viewing head and fluorescence lamp house from an Olympus BX-series microscope.

If you need help with reassembly, simply follow these same steps in reverse order.

Thank you for watching. I’m Walker Kelly with Munday Scientific Instrument Service, and I hope you have a wonderful day.
